FEGA & SCHMITT: Two-phase simulation of warehouse expansion in Heilsbronn

FEGA & SCHMITT Elektrogroßhandel GmbH in Heilsbronn expanded its warehouse. To support the planning process, SimPlan carried out a simulation study ranging from data simulation to detailed simulation of the final concept. TGW Systems Integration GmbH was responsible for the technical implementation.

Initial situation: Two-phase simulation from data simulation to the detailed concept

The simulation study supported the entire planning process at FEGA & SCHMITT in two phases:

  • Phase I: Simulation of the business logic to test the system’s basic functionality
  • Phase II: Detailed simulation for the implementation of the TGW system to optimise the technical implementation
Objective: To determine key performance indicators under dynamic conditions

The simulation study served to support and optimise the planning process. The following key performance indicators were determined under dynamic conditions:

  • Throughput
  • Capacity utilisation
  • Throughput times

It also demonstrated the effects of changes to parameters and structures, enabling well-informed decisions to be made during the planning process.

Solution: Inventory, space and shuttle management in Plant Simulation

The simulation solution covered the following areas:

  • Detailed inventory, space and shuttle management
  • Precise order management based on future scenarios
  • Dynamic calculation of shipping units

The software tools Plant Simulation 16.0, SimSuite Logistic and SimAssist were used.

Results: System design verified, material flows optimised

The simulation study successfully verified the system design and performance. In addition, strategies and material flows were optimised to achieve greater efficiency and improved process flows.

Simulation supports the warehouse expansion from concept to implementation

The case study demonstrates how a two-phase simulation – ranging from high-level business logic to the plant manufacturer’s detailed simulation – closely integrates planning and technical implementation.
