More InformationAutoMod software for material flow simulation and 3D process analysis
Introduction to the tool
AutoMod is one of the established simulation tools for detailed material flow and process modelling in production and logistics. The software combines a powerful simulation engine with realistic 3D visualisation. This makes it suitable for both traditional analyses and modern applications such as emulation, virtual commissioning and virtual reality. For beginners, AutoMod offers a clearly structured modelling approach with graphical support. At the same time, the tool can be flexibly extended and reliably models even complex processes.
AutoMod is particularly in demand where numerous moving elements, extensive control logic or integrated visualisation are important. Companies use the software to underpin decision-making, identify risks at an early stage and communicate processes transparently.
Areas of application and typical uses
AutoMod covers a broad spectrum of logistics and production-related applications. Typical areas of application include:
- Production and assembly planning with detailed process mapping
- Sizing and optimisation of warehouse systems
- Simulation of conveyor technology and automated guided vehicle systems
- Analysis and planning of complete supply chains
- Emulation and online coupling for virtual commissioning
- Visualisation and communication of concepts in 3D and virtual reality
The combination of animation, simulation and analysis creates a tool that supports both technical departments and management teams.

Key features and strengths
AutoMod offers a powerful combination of:
- A high-performance simulation engine for realistic material flow visualisations
- Detailed 3D visualisation, extending to virtual reality
- Interactive modelling with graphical editors
- Support for complex control logic via a proprietary simulation programming language
- Comprehensive analysis functions for key performance indicators, throughput or bottlenecks
- Flexible extensions for various industries and applications
The software is particularly notable for its stability when handling large models. Even very extensive systems with many moving components can be simulated efficiently.
Structure and available modules
AutoMod has a modular structure and can be tailored specifically to the respective application. The base system comprises Process System, Simulator, Dtrace, ACE and import functions such as IGES and SDX.
Optional modules:
- AS RS for warehouse technology
- Conveyor for conveyor technology
- Kinematics for robotics
- Pathmover for industrial trucks
- Bridge Crane for bridge cranes
- Power and Free for overhead conveyor systems
- Tanks and Pipes for liquid media
- AutoTruck for transport vehicles
Supplementary programmes:
- AutoView for animated films
- AutoStat for experiments and statistical analyses
- Model Communications for data exchange
- ToolSim as a rapid simulator
Integration and interfaces
AutoMod can be integrated into existing IT and automation environments. Common interfaces such as ActiveX, TCP/IP sockets or OLE are supported. This allows data from external systems to be utilised or simulation and control to be linked together.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How beginner-friendly is AutoMod?
The software offers graphical modelling, but remains technically oriented. Beginners benefit from clear structures and modular extensions.
Is AutoMod suitable for large models?
Yes, AutoMod is renowned for handling extensive material flow systems and maintains high performance even under heavy loads.
Can AutoMod be used for emulation?
Yes, it supports online couplings and is suitable for virtual commissioning.
Manufacturer and distribution
AutoMod is developed by Applied Materials Inc. SimPlan AG is the official distributor in German-speaking countries, the Netherlands and China. In addition to licence sales, SimPlan offers training, support and consultancy services on the use of the software.
Important notice for AutoMod users
As of 31 December 2026, sales, further development and official support for AutoMod will be discontinued. Existing perpetual licences will, in principle, remain valid. However, faulty USB dongles will no longer be replaced after this date, and new electronic licences can no longer be issued.
We therefore recommend that you consider your future use of the software and potential alternatives at an early stage. SimPlan will continue to support you beyond 2026 with existing AutoMod models and projects, as well as with the selection and implementation of a suitable successor solution.
