The competitiveness and sustainability of complex production systems (e.g. semiconductor manufacturing) in Europe depends heavily on their ability to respond quickly to changes in demand and to produce a large number of high-quality products on time. To reliably meet promised delivery deadlines, planners need to be able to accurately predict production throughput and lead times of customer orders over weeks or even months. This is only possible if the underlying production system is controlled by a decision support system that allows planners to allocate resources efficiently and effectively respond to random disturbances affecting the value creation process.

The main objective of SimPlan’s collaboration with many other partners is therefore to provide simulated test environments for new stochastic, quantitative, data-driven evaluation models and decision support approaches. The approaches are based on leading-edge optimization technology and are developed in another subproject. The main purpose is the effective planning and control of production and operations in large manufacturing networks. These simulation-based environments are used as testbed for the developed approaches. At the same time, the simulation models should be designed so that they, as digital twins of the factory environment, can permanently support the improvement of production and logistic processes.

The project receives grants from the European H2020 research and innovation programme, ECSEL Joint Undertaking, and National Funding Authorities from 19 involved countries under grant agreement no. GAP-737459 – 999978918.

The participating countries are Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Turkey.
