Automation of the quality inspection of motorcycle tires

Automation of quality testing for motorbike tyres

Initial situation: Automating testing during the planning phase

A tyre manufacturer was planning to automate the quality testing of motorbike tyres and wished to validate this planning scenario prior to implementation. In addition, the required buffer areas for tested and untested tyres needed to be determined.

Objective: Compare testing machine manufacturers, ensure throughput

The aim was to compare different manufacturers of testing machines with varying cycle times and availability rates, and to ensure the planned throughput of the system.

Solution: Simulation model incorporating rework, set-up times and quick-change devices

SimPlan modelled the rework processes, as well as the set-up times and quick-change devices of the testing machines, within the simulation model. On this basis, a test machine utilisation plan optimised for stock levels and set-up times was developed.

Results: Throughput secured, system suppliers evaluated

The simulation secured the planned throughput as well as the required buffer levels. At the same time, it provided the basis for a well-founded evaluation and comparison of the various system suppliers.

Simulation as a basis for decision-making in supplier selection

The case study demonstrates how a simulation not only validates the company’s own planning but also provides an objective basis for comparison when choosing between competing equipment suppliers.
